Initially these boxes were designed to give 3mm scale modellers the kind of flexibility and performance which had previously been the preserve of the larger scales, but it wasn't long before they caught on with overseas HO modellers, 4mm narrow gaugers, or anyone else struggling for space between the frames.

They feature a slimmed-down version of the RoadRunner's gearing, giving the same 54:1, 40:1 and 30:1 reduction ratios for prototypical speeds.

In order to make best use of the space inside the loco body, the highly-tractable Mashima 10 series motor can be mounted with the flats to the sides or, alternatively, it can be turned through 90 degrees to reduce the overall height. Motors with mounting screw holes on 8mm centres can also be fitted.
